Chapter Forty-One
Teal floated back from the inner reality he couldn’t ignore.
Moth’s dusty eyes stared back at him, deep with worry, and he felt a pang of guilt for being the one who had caused it. But he couldn’t stop the voices, and certainly not the one who shouted the loudest. He still wasn’t sure whether or not he was going crazy, even though he had insisted to Moth he wasn’t. What he did know was that he was the one the hunters were looking for. He had thought about running to save his brothers, but the voice had stopped him. It had told him about Clove and Noah. It had told him to send Gabe.
The absence of his latest brother was painfully apparent, the space where he had been lonely and desolate. He wondered what Moth had said before Gabe left.
‘Hey, focus.’ Moth waved a hand in front of his face and Teal blinked rapidly.
‘Sorry. It’s hard to come back. The voices are trying to tell me so much stuff it all gets jumbled up and then I get confused.’ He took Moth’s offer of a hand up and stared into the night.
‘When did Gabe go?’ The last words stuck in his throat.
Moth shrugged, his eyes downcast to the ground. ‘Just before you woke up. He was so scared, Teal. He cried. And I couldn’t do anything about it.’ Moth’s anguish was swallowed by the darkness. He hadn’t been like this since Sasha had died.
‘We just have to trust him.’
‘Trust him to do what, Teal? Die by himself because you sent him there and I didn’t stop him?’ Moth’s words fell from his lips in an angry torrent and Teal felt them as much as a physical blow. Moth swung at the wall with his fist and the old brickwork crumbled under the force. Tears of frustration welled in his eyes when he turned. The wind picked up and blasted around the corner, carrying early fallen leaves in its wake.
A force propelled Teal’s gaze towards the old convent behind them, brooding in the dark. It huddled there like a monster in the closet.
‘We have to go in there.’ Teal inclined his head, fully expecting Moth to lose patience. Moth opened his mouth, then swallowed back whatever he was going to say. His eyes carried a strange sort of acceptance.
They scrambled over the wall and stole across the blackness of the courtyard, both glad and edgy to be in the maw of the imposing but derelict building. A boarded-up window gave easily to Moth’s nudge. Once inside, the darkness seemed unfathomable. A damp, dusty smell covered everything with a forlorn regret. Teal wouldn’t have been surprised to see Miss Havisham floating past in her tattered wedding dress.
‘What the hell are we looking for?’ Moth whispered. It wasn’t the kind of place to shout. It was sleeping and it would treat with displeasure any who disturbed its slumber.
‘Wait.’ Moth’s arm snaked out and grabbed Teal by the elbow. The wet flicker of a tongue in the dark.
